Three 10-minute presentations to showcase short case studies looking at retrofit and regeneration successes.
Hear three short, fast-paced presentations on:
Talk 1: Nick Jackson - 1 Triton Square - Reducing Carbon Through Marginal Gains
1 Triton Square was originally designed by Arup for British Land in the 1990s – with future regeneration in mind. Twenty years later, with the needs of customers having evolved over time, British Land saw the potential to increase the building’s size and embed longevity and adaptability into its design. Arup's retrofit of 1 Triton Square provided three extra floors, resulting in twice as much net office area and a BREEAM Outstanding sustainability rating, all while retaining façades and superstructure.
Reflecting the shift in commercial property development towards the Life Science market in Central London, Arup has been now appointed to provide multi-disciplinary services, to transform 1 Triton Square into a world class science and innovation building that will deliver highly flexible, fitted-out laboratory spaces to attract start-up life science companies.
Talk 2: Olaide Oboh - The Values of Impactful Mixed-use Development and Long-term Social and Economic Impact
Talk 3: Linda Thiel - Social Impact of Urban Regeneration
As cities are planned today, we know though research, that public spaces aren’t used equally amongst girls and boys. In 2017, White Arkitekter initiate a research project undertaken by our anthropologists and architects, to find out why and how to accommodate places for girls in the city. The research project ‘Flickrum: Places for Girls’ addresses the inequalities in city planning, and proposes solutions by using an innovative co-design methodology that includes the input of young people in the design process. White has implemented this methodology in their engagement process across Sweden and UK. One example is the Gascoigne Neighbourhood in Barking where places for girls was used across several phases. Drawing from Scandinavian design principles, Linda will discuss how to design safe and inclusive neighbourhoods, at scale and pace

Two 10-minute presentations about tech and innovation making waves in the Environmental and Social spheres.
Talk 1: Richard Murphy - Building Another Dimension
In the past, blueprints were drafted by hand, layering information from the foundation, structural, electrical and many other drawings and reports, before being translated into three dimensions on construction sites. After centuries of our industry building 3D structures from 2D designs, what are the consequences of adding a third dimension?
Richard Murphy explores the benefits – and the impacts – of introducing Building Information Modelling (BIM) to Berry Croft, a 39-home development in East Sussex that Thakeham is building in partnership with social housing provider, Stonewater. Thakeham’s Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) journey began there at Newick, modelling a site in BIM for the first time and implementing 15 new house types during design. Working in 3D (with the option of viewing in 2D) is a more inclusive approach, as not everybody can easily translate a 2D image into a 3D one in their heads.
Now, with our adoption of BIM and our modelling of not only each home, but the entire development, you can fly through a scheme to understand how it looks and feels. By integrating all the information into one place, we can solve more problems at the design stage, rather than onsite thus reducing waste – be that materials or time - and ultimately avoiding delays. By embedding those fixes into the design stage, we ensure mistakes are not repeated. During this talk, Richard will outline the delivery methodology, using a fly through to show design versus reality.
Talk 2: Drew Davy - Urban Biodiversity Net Gain: Building Resilient Cities for the Future
Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is essential for enhancing urban environments and ensuring sustainable development. Implementing BNG on-site, especially in urban areas, helps mitigate the urban heat island effect, manage water runoff, and improve mental and physical health by providing access to nature. Historically, London has seen a significant loss of green space due to urbanization, but initiatives like BNG can help reverse this trend and create resilient cities for the future.
Discuss ways property managers and developers can work with tenants to promote and implement sustainable practices within residential and commercial spaces
